Workforce to Graduate School: My Motivation

A while back, I asked my cousin to share with me what made her want to go back to school for graduate studies after being in the workforce for so long. I think it is amazing when people are motivated to go back to school especially when the balance can be challenging. I recently took a certification course while working full-time. It was a nightmare! The end result was worth it, but the stress to get there I could have done without.

Read Kenya’s response and advice below:

Initially, I was hesitant to apply to graduate school because I’ve been out of school for so long, I’ve already been working in the field of Human Services for five years, and I wouldn't be able to quit my job to focus solely on my courses. Because, I mean (lets be candid) I don’t have anyone to support me financially. However, I quickly retracted any negative thought when I realized there is more work I needed to do, not only for myself, but for the people I support.

As I mentioned, I work in the Human Service field and I started feeling stuck because I felt as though I could no longer provide my clients with all the support they needed. I’ve had several career advancements and although I had the knowledge and drive to become a Director I was always overlooked because I lacked the education experience. I truly believe I have found my calling with my career path but still, and sadly I was setting limitations on myself by allowing years of fear to deter me from taking the next steps and applying to graduate school. Now, that I’ve been accepted to graduate school I now have to find the balance of working full-time, going to school and maintaining my social life. As I embark on this journey I’ll continue to remain eager to expand my knowledge in the field and remember the endless opportunities for career advancement. There is more I want to do and I know once I obtain this degree I will be able do so and more.

If I could offer any advice to someone who feels it may be too late or thinks it doesn’t make sense to go back to school I would say do not limit yourself. We literally learn something new everyday so why not learn more in school.
